Sunday 24 October, 15:00, Penghao Theatre, Beijing
Roderick Hietbrink is a Dutch visual artist, currently Artist in Residence at IFP in Beijing. Preparations for The Living Room started almost one year ago and will result in a video installation that will premiere early 2011. The preview at Penghao Theatre will be the first public screening!
The work questions the meaning of internal (private) space, in this case the living room of a typical Dutch row house, in relation to the 'external'. The living room of the house can be considered as the heart of a home; a physical as well as a mental interior that allows for daydreaming about that world beyond the glass pane. Since the sixties, the row house has become a very popular type of housing in the Netherlands. It distinguishes itself by two large windows at both ends of the living room filling the room with daylight, that seemingly reduce the boundary between the inside and the outside world. The Living Room depicts the quiet atmosphere of a decorated living room when it is suddenly interrupted by the unexpected presence of a foreign element.
The afternoon at Penghao Theatre will start with an introduction by Roderick Hietbrink on his artistic practice, followed by a short introduction and the screening of The Living Room. After the screening you are all invited to join the discussion about this work. The introductions and discussion will be held in English with a Chinese translator.
