Charlott Markus
Charlott Markus is a Swedish artist currently living and working in Amsterdam. After studying fine art photography in Denmark she graduated the Photography Department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam 2007. Markus has actively been exhibiting in the Netherlands and abroad. Exhibition venues include among others FOAM (Amsterdam), Multi media Art Museum (Moscow), Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museum, LM Projects (Los Angeles), Nest (Den Haag), Huis Marseille/Museum of Photography (Amsterdam), P/////AKT (Amsterdam) and the Three Shadows Photography Art Centre, Beijing (CN).
Markus constructs still lives and arrangements that predominantly end up as photographic series and as site-specific spatial pieces. Charlott frequently works with Still Life photography where she weaves personal narratives and their links to objects and materials, often using textiles as a complex carrier of meanings, memories and sensibilities. During her time in Beijing, Charlott will turn back to the memories of her childhood, watching Chinese films from directors such as Zhang Yimou in which fabric was used as a silent agent what could not be said or done in real.
The residency of Charlott Markus is generously funded and supported by Mondriaan Funds.
